Running from the Sun

One More Time with Feeling - Tractor Tavern, 12/10

2017

A bad year.

A good year.

A weird-as-fuck year.

Running from the Sun came out a little over a year ago and since then I've dropped two videos, been interviewed, reviewed, rejected, accepted, triumphed and failed more times than I'd like to count. It's the way I roll and I wouldn't have it any other way.

This Sunday, December 10th, I'm wrapping up the Running from the Sun era with one of my biggest performances ever at Tractor Tavern in Ballard. It's an early show, we take the stage at 7pm. It's a full band performance, we will be joined by our ace in the hole and my frequent collaborator, John Theroux, who will be projecting live visuals on stage.

We are opening the evening for Ry Flannery and The Nite Owls and Saint John and The Revelations, both excellent artists that I highly recommend you check out.

After this show, the focus turns to the next phase. In 2018 I have new singles, new videos and a new EP that I think you'll really like. Don't miss this show and don't you DARE think you've seen all the tricks I have up my sleeve! I'll be seeing you Sunday!

The Current State of My Being

Currently Listening to:

The Raincoats, “Odyshape”.

I love discordant records with fucked up timing and lots of strings. This album, as best I can tell, is not loved quite the same as their debut but it is my favorite. Ana De Silva, Gina Birch, and Vicky Aspinall prove here that artistic vision trumps technical brilliance every time. I always turn this on when I’m feeling a little…well…

Currently feeling:

Exposed and impatient

My daily pre-release ritual is sending dozens of emails to press outlets every morning. It is an exercise that is both cathartic and absolutely horrible. There are the inevitable rejections, which are better than the inevitable apathy, and then, every once in a while there is the “I love it!” email that I’m not-so-secretly hoping everyone will send.
Possibly my greatest talent, if it can be called that, is investing my whole self in my music. I leave it all on the stage, the studio, whatever the place, I leave it there. That said, sending your heart in to the hands of the press can be kinda demoralizing if you don’t harden yourself and stay focused on what really matters.

After more than 20 years, I must confess that my biggest blind spot is my sensitivity to rejection. But my faith is stronger than it’s ever been and, though rejections will continue, so will I.

Currently feeling:

Better.

That felt good to say.

Currently really digging:

Kikagaku Moyo "House in the Tall Grass"

Beautiful Japanese Psych Rock. I don’t think I need to say more but I will. If Can was Radiohead with a  pinch of early Mogwai and everybody was pleasantly stoned, they would be Kikagaku Moyo. Highly recommended.

Currently hoping you are aware of:

The big release show on 11/17 at Sunset! You can get a copy of “Running from the Sun” on CD or cassette two weeks before the album drops and see a diverse bill of great bands. Let’s make this a bash to remember! You can buy tickets here and RSVP to the show here and/or here.

My debut solo EP "Running from the Sun" will be available on all streaming services and Bandcamp on Friday, December 2nd.

If you've followed my music over the years, you've heard it take on different forms. This album represents a new way to hear my songs and I am proud to finally share it with you. It is atmospheric, haunting and very easy to sing along to. If you are a fan of Death By Stars or my solo stuff, you'll dig it!

I put my whole heart in to this. I think it's the best thing I've ever done. If you want to hear it REALLY early...sign up for my mailing list and stand by.....

I filmed my first video this weekend. Directed by CTPAK Film Crew's John Theroux, "Center of Command" tells a surreal and cerebral tale. Have you ever stalked yourself through a playground? Have you ever had your ass kicked by your inner child?  I have.

The video will drop in mid-November but if you sign up for my mailing list, my sources tell me you can probably see it early.

Ok, so you don't want to sign up for the mailing list but want to hear the album early anyway?! FINE! How about you get your ass to The Sunset in Ballard on Thursday, November 17th and see a RAD show and buy a CD or a cassette copy (or both) of "Running from the Sun" two weeks before it comes out?! Ya happy now?!

Seriously, I am so excited for this show. Among Authors, who just released an excellent album of their own and A Breakthrough in Field Studies, who are releasing a new album this month, will be joining us.

I'll have brand new shirts and stickers for sale as well.

Music starts at 9pm, 21+, $8 at the door. Get tickets now!

Or let's say you wanted to go to the show for FREE, get a copy of the CD for FREE and a FREE shirt and sticker?

There is an answer....

Sign up for my mailing list before 10/15 and you will get your chance!
